What Determines Antique Bisque Doll Values

In order to judge the true value, it is important to pay attention to the age, the maker, the condition and the completeness of the item. These are all part of the package that determines antique bisque doll values.

Reproductions do not have the same value as antiques, and it is sometimes difficult to determine which is which. However, one sure way to discover the difference is to ask for a provenance. A provenance is a documented history of ownership, and increases the value, although not all antique dolls will have one.

If you find a bisque doll by a famous maker such as Jumeau, Bru, Huret or Kestner, it will almost certainly be reflected in the price. They have been known to sell for very high prices.

Of course, like all valuable antique bisque dolls, they have to be in good condition, and it is important to check that there are no hairline cracks, restoration work or other damage. The head should be translucent and there should be no dark spots or blemishes on the bisque, as this could indicate restoration work.

One also needs to look at the eyes and check that they are appropriate for the item, or if they have been reset. This need not necessarily be a problem, but will affect the value if sleep or flirty eyes have been reset to stationary.

Costumes also have a bearing on the value. If it has been redressed, it will not have the same worth as one in its original clothing. However, if the original clothing is in poor condition, the valuation will be lower. A further thing to be aware of is that the costume suits the piece in question. For example, a Bebe outfit on a German dolly-faced figure would bring the value down.

Evidence of parts substitution such as the wig will also make the antique less valuable. Furthermore, pay attention to the quality of painting. A figure that was well painted by the original maker will have a higher value than a poorly painted one.
